Summer Business Survival Series: Week 1 – "I'll Sort the Paperwork Later!"
Summer is busy enough without paperwork piling up. In the first of our Summer Business Survival Series, we're looking at one of the most common phrases we hear from small business owners and tradespeople: "I'll sort it later." Spoiler alert... later has a habit of never arriving!

The Paperwork Pile Isn't Going to Shrink by Itself
If you're self-employed or run a small business, chances are you've said it before. "I'll do the invoices tonight." "I'll sort the receipts this weekend." "I'll update the bookkeeping when work quietens down." The problem is, work rarely does quieten down. One job becomes the next, evenings disappear, weekends get filled and before you know it, you're faced with a carrier bag full of receipts, unpaid invoices and paperwork that feels too overwhelming to even begin.
The good news is that staying on top of your finances doesn't have to mean spending hours behind a desk. Setting aside just 20 minutes each Friday can save you hours of stress later in the year. It also means fewer surprises when it comes to VAT, Self Assessment or your year-end accounts—and gives you a much clearer picture of how your business is really performing. Think of it as giving your business a quick weekly MOT rather than waiting for it to break down.
✅ Your Friday 20-Minute Business Reset
Before you finish for the week, spend a few minutes ticking off this checklist:
☐ Send any outstanding invoices.
☐ Chase any overdue payments.
☐ Photograph or file your receipts.
☐ Check your business bank account for any unexplained transactions.
☐ Record any business expenses from the week.
☐ Put money aside for your tax and VAT (if applicable).
☐ Check your diary for upcoming payment or filing deadlines.
☐ Make a note of any questions for your accountant before they become bigger issues.
Small jobs done regularly are much easier than one huge catch-up session.
At our practice, we don't expect your records to be perfect—that's why we're here. We work with builders, electricians, plumbers, decorators, hairdressers, mechanics, consultants and all kinds of small businesses across the North East. We know you'd rather be doing the work you're passionate about than sitting behind a laptop sorting receipts. Whether you're meticulously organised or your paperwork currently lives in the glovebox of your van, we'll meet you where you are and help you stay on track.
This summer, make one small promise to your future self: don't leave the paperwork until "later". A 20-minute reset each week can save hours of stress, help you stay in control of your finances and leave you free to enjoy your weekends. And if you ever feel like the paperwork has got the better of you, remember—you don't have to tackle it alone.
