Summer Business Survival Series: Week 4 – Busy Doesn't Always Mean Profitable
You're booked up for weeks, the phone won't stop ringing and there's money coming into the business... so why does it still feel like there's never quite enough cash? In this week's Summer Business Survival Series, we're looking at one of the biggest misconceptions in business: being busy doesn't always mean being profitable.

The Business Is Busy… So Why Is Cash Tight?
If you're a tradesperson or run a small business, you'll know the feeling. You're working long days, juggling customers, ordering materials and fitting in quotes at weekends. On paper, business is booming. But then a VAT bill lands, a customer pays late or an unexpected expense crops up, and suddenly cash feels tight again.
The truth is, turnover isn't the same as profit, and profit isn't the same as cash in the bank. We often meet business owners who are incredibly busy but still struggle with cash flow. It's not because they're doing anything wrong—it's because cash flow is about timing. You might have thousands of pounds' worth of work completed, but if the invoices haven't been sent or your customers haven't paid, that money isn't working for your business yet.
We've seen clients transform their businesses with a few simple changes. One tradesperson reduced the time it took customers to pay simply by invoicing as soon as each job was completed instead of waiting until the end of the month. Another started putting aside money for VAT and tax every time a payment came in, avoiding the panic of large bills later in the year. Small habits like these often make a much bigger difference than people expect.
💡 Five Ways to Improve Your Cash Flow This Summer
💷 Invoice promptly.
The sooner an invoice is sent, the sooner it can be paid. Delaying invoices often means delaying your income.
📅 Know what's coming.
Keep a note of upcoming VAT payments, tax bills and regular business costs so there are no unexpected surprises.
💰 Put money aside regularly.
Treat tax and VAT as money you're looking after, not money you've earned. Setting aside a percentage of every payment can make future bills much easier to manage.
📞 Don't be afraid to chase payments.
Most customers simply need a polite reminder. The longer you leave it, the harder it can become to collect what's owed.
📊 Understand your numbers.
Don't rely solely on your bank balance to tell you how your business is performing. Knowing your income, expenses and profit puts you in control.
We know that most business owners didn't start their business because they love spreadsheets. You started because you're good at your trade. Our job is to help you understand the numbers behind your business so you can make informed decisions, improve your cash flow and spend less time worrying about money.
This summer, take a few minutes to look beyond how busy you are and ask yourself a different question:
Is my business generating the cash and profit I want it to?
If you're not sure of the answer, we'd be happy to help you find it.
