The Accountant Was Cheap… Until the Bill Arrived

Choosing an accountant based on the lowest quote can seem like a smart move—until hidden charges start appearing. From surprise fees for phone calls to extra costs for tax returns and compliance work, non-transparent pricing can leave business owners paying far more than expected. Here's why transparency matters and what every North East business owner should look out for.

How Much do You Charge?

For many business owners, freelancers and contractors across the North East, choosing an accountant often starts with a simple question: "How much do you charge?"It's understandable. Running a business is expensive enough without adding unnecessary costs. When one accountant quotes £50 per month and another quotes £120, the cheaper option can seem like an easy decision.

But what happens when the £50 accountant isn't really £50?

A local business owner recently told us a story that will sound familiar to many people. After setting up his limited company, he searched online for accountancy services. One firm advertised what appeared to be an incredibly competitive monthly fee. It seemed too good to ignore. The first few months were uneventful. The direct debit left his account each month and everything appeared to be running smoothly. Then the emails started arriving.

There was an additional charge for submitting a tax return. Another fee for preparing year-end accounts. A separate invoice for payroll. A charge for Companies House filings. Then a consultation fee for a phone call that lasted less than twenty minutes. By the end of the year, the attractive monthly fee had become almost irrelevant. The total amount paid was significantly higher than expected, and more expensive than several accountants who had originally appeared to charge more.

The problem wasn't necessarily the fees themselves. Professional accountancy services have value. Businesses should expect to pay for expertise, compliance support and advice. The issue was that the true cost was never clear from the beginning.

Unfortunately, this isn't uncommon. Many accountancy firms advertise a headline price that catches attention but doesn't always tell the full story. What appears to be a comprehensive service can sometimes exclude essential elements that most business owners assume are included.

  • Annual accounts may cost extra.

  • Corporation tax returns may cost extra.

  • Self-assessment returns may cost extra.

  • Bookkeeping support may cost extra.

  • Telephone advice may cost extra.

  • Even responding to HMRC enquiries can sometimes generate additional charges.

The result is uncertainty.

Instead of knowing exactly what professional support will cost each month, business owners find themselves worrying about whether every email, question or request will trigger another invoice. That uncertainty can have a surprising impact on how businesses operate.

We've seen business owners avoid contacting their accountant because they're concerned about being charged. They delay asking important questions. They postpone seeking advice on tax planning. Some even make financial decisions without professional guidance because they don't want another bill arriving at the end of the month.

Ironically, that can end up costing far more than transparent accountancy fees ever would.

A five-minute conversation at the right time can prevent costly mistakes, missed tax reliefs or compliance issues. But if clients feel discouraged from reaching out, the relationship stops being proactive and becomes purely transactional. The best accountant-client relationships are built on trust and communication.

Business owners should feel comfortable picking up the phone when they need guidance. They should understand exactly what they're paying for and what services are included. There shouldn't be unpleasant surprises hidden behind small print or complicated fee structures.

We feel transparency benefits everyone.

Clients know where they stand financially. Accountants can focus on delivering value rather than explaining unexpected invoices. Most importantly, businesses gain confidence in the support they're receiving.

When comparing accountants, the question shouldn't simply be "Who's cheapest?"

A better question is "What am I actually getting for my money?"

Sometimes the most expensive bill is the one you never saw coming.
